Considering loft conversion but not sure what your options are?  There are four basic types of loft conversion and the layout of your house will play a big part in which is best.

Roof light conversions are the most budget-friendly and cause the least disruption to the rest of the house because there’s no changes to the shape of the roof or the pitch.  Instead, the focus is on adding skylights or roof windows, adding a full floor and then a staircase to create a habitable room in the loft.

A dormer conversion involves adding an extension to the roof to create the space needed for a habitable space.  They are the most popular type of loft conversion and can work on most houses that have a sloping roof.  They are in the mid-range in terms of cost.

Hip to gable conversions extends the sloping hip of the roof at the side of the house to create a vertical gable wall.  This adds to the loft space but only works for detached or semi-detached houses with a free sloping side roof area.  Detached houses can consider adding these to both sides.

Mansard conversions run the length of the house and change the roof slope to a near vertical pitch.  These are the most expensive types of loft conversion but also create the greatest amount of space.  They work on almost any type of house too.
