It is often easier to keep raised beds in top condition and looking smart once they are in place.  Plants are restricted to the space of the raised bed and they don’t grow out of control or over a path.  The raised nature also means some pests can’t reach the plants as easily – many gardeners say if you use copper flashing on the edge of the box, slugs won’t crawl over for it for one.

If you have a boggy or damp garden, raised beds will let you grow plants you otherwise couldn’t because you can ensure better drainage.  It is simpler to keep on top of weeds and you can even cover the surface in material such as wood chips to help keep it smart.
